Merle L. Nell Vernon-Merle L. Nell, age 78, of Jenkins Road passed away unexpectedly early Saturday morning November 26, 2016 in St. Elizabeth's Medical Center after being stricken while on a fire call with the Vernon Fire Department. He was born on June 28, 1938 in Harrisburg, PA, a son of the late David N. and Thelma (Lindsay) Nell and was a graduate of V.V.S. Central School Class of 1956. He proudly served his country with the United States Marines from 1956-1958 as a military police officer. On Aptil 24, 1965 Merle and Susan Weimer were united in marriage in the Church of Annunciation of Clark Mills and shared a loving union of over fifty years together until Susan's death on September 21, 2015. He was a life member and past chief of the Vernon Volunteer Fire Department serving fifty-one years. He was currently the Fire Police Captain for the department. Prior to his retirement Merle was employed with the Vernon Postal Service for over 30 years, as a clerk and then as the rural carrier. In his spare time he enjoyed camping with his wife and family and especially with his grandchildren. He also enjoyed attending all of his grandchildrens sporting events and spending winters in Florida. In his early years, Merle enjoyed racing at local drag strips and in later years, enjoyed attending car shows. Survivng are his two sons and two daughters-in-law, Scott and Cynthia Nell of Vernon, Mark and Jolaine Nell of Verona, one daughter and son-in-law, Lisa and Todd Esch of Sherrill, his grandchildren, Adam, Matthew, Zachary, Abigail, Marissa and Daniel, two step-grandchildren, Travis and Trevor, one sister-in-law, Doris Nell Wallace of Fairfield, Ohio, in-laws, Judy (Fred) Maciag of Vernon and Bruce (Carol) Weimer of South Burlington, VT, as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his wife, Susan, and a brother, Bruce. Family and friends are invited to call on Wednesday from 2:00 to 6:00 p.m. at the Malecki Funeral Home Inc., 23 Front Street, Vernon. Burial will be Thursday at 10:00 am in Maple Grove Cemetery, Vernon, New York.
