Sherrill – With heavy hearts, the family of Jill A. Salm announces her peaceful passing after a courageous battle with cancer on Friday morning, August 15, 2025, at the Oneida Health Center in Oneida, NY, surrounded by the love of her family. She was 76.
Born on September 6, 1948, in Oneida, New York, Jill was the daughter of the late Jack E. and Nina (Virgil) Foeppel. She was a proud graduate of Vernon Verona Sherrill Schools and went on to earn her associate's degree from SUNY Morrisville. On January 4, 1973, Jill married her beloved husband, Gary D. Salm, beginning a lifelong partnership that spanned 52 years.
Jill dedicated much of her life to serving her community. She worked as a civil service representative for the City of Sherrill and held several positions over the years, including foodservice in the V.V.S. school district, the C.A.C, and the Oneida Community Golf Course. Wherever she worked, Jill was known for her kind words, strong work ethic, and the genuine joy she found in connecting with folks in the community. Beyond her work, Jill was happiest in the simple moments. She loved gardening, camping, and spending time in nature—especially feeding squirrels with Gary at Verona Beach or walking the trails at Rogers Conservation Center. But above all, Jill's greatest joy was time spent with her family, whom she cherished deeply, especially her grandchildren and becoming a great-grandmother.
Jill is survived by her husband, Gary of Sherrill, NY; her three loving children, Jennifer (Mark) Piersall of Oneida, NY, Jaime Salm (Andy Blockno) of Longmont, CO, and Christopher (Laurie) Salm of Cranston, RI; her treasured granddaughters, Bailey (Zachary) Wartella of Gastonia, NC, and Olivia Piersall, Oneida, NY; and her great-granddaughter, Margaret "Maggie" Wartella. She also leaves behind her (slightly older) twin brother, Jack (Alice) Foeppel of Canastota, along with several nieces, nephews, and many dear friends. She was predeceased by her sister, Nannette Foeppel. May her spirit live on in every hummingbird and dragonfly you see, a gentle reminder of her love and presence.
