Obituary of George D. Harp

Vernon-George D. Harp, age 89, of Youngs Road passed away in the early morning of March 14, with his loving family by his side. George was born on January 5, 1931 in Norwich, NY. He is the son of the late George I. and Jennie (Cole) Harp, and was a graduate of Norwich High School. On October 17, 1950 George enlisted with the United State Army and proudly served with the 3rd Calvary Regiment 1st Battalion Tank Company as a Tank Commander, as well as Sergeant First Class. On October 16, 1953 after receiving The Purple Heart and Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster, George was honorably discharged. His associations included the William Russell American Legion Post 404 of Vernon, the Vernon Harness Horse Association, as well as the United States Trotting Association. He also attended the Vernon Methodist Church. George’s passion was harness racing where he trained and drove standout horses like Swinging Glory, Erin Laude, Erin Calico, Racey Comet and Erin Coco. George also competed in the prestigious Roosevelt International Trot. As a result of his successful racing career he was inducted into Florida Harness Horse Hall of Fame. Surviving are his wife Jacqueline Harp, five children and their spouses, Ron and Diane Harp, Roxane and Arnold Baldwin, Robin and Joseph Murphy, Richard Harp and Ronda Winn, ten grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren. Sister Wilma Mattucci, and his brother Warren and Joan Harp. Family and friends are invited to call on Thursday, March 19, 2020 from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. at the Malecki Funeral Home Inc., 464 Sherrill Rd., Sherrill, NY where funeral services will follow at the funeral home at 3:00 p.m. Spring burial with Military Honors will be in North Norwich Cemetery, Norwich, NY.
