Durhamville-Richard R. "Abe" Abel, age 81, of Dunbarton Road passed away early Saturday morning, September 8, 2018 in St. Luke's Healthcare Center. He was born on November 7, 1936 in Rome, New York a son of the late Roser and Dorothy (Klein) Abel and was a graduate of V.V.S. Central School. On May 2, 1960 Abe enlisted with the Army Air Corp and was honorably discharged on May 3, 1962. On September 17, 1960 in Georgia, Abe was united in marriage with Carol R. Stuber and the couple has shared nearly fifty-eight years together. Abe was a dairy farmer until the age of twenty-three before going into the service and then returned to work for the New York State DOT where he was a supervisor with over thirty-five years of service retiring on July 27, 1993. In his spare time he enjoyed mowing the parks in his neighborhood and fishing at the St. Lawrence River. Surviving are his wife, Carol P. Abel, one son and daughter-in-law, Roy (Dawn) Abel of Whitelaw, one daughter and son-in-law, Lorry and (Jay) Christensen of Oneida, four grandchildren, Tyler, Traci, J.D., Jessica, two step-grandchildren, Reannin, Patrick and several great-grandchildren. In keeping with Abe's wishes there will be no calling hours. Graveside services will be held on Tuesday, September 11, 2018 at 1:00 p.m. in Maple Grove Cemetery, Rt. 5, Vernon, New York.
