Obituary of Catherine D. McDermott

Sherrill-Catherine D. McDermott, age 96, a lifelong Sherrill resident and more recently a resident of the Waterville Residential Center passed away Friday morning, January 20, 2023 at the facility.

  She was born on June 12, 1926 in Oneida New York a daughter of the late Edward and Frances (Kinney) Dixon and attended the Sherrill Schools.

  After leaving school Catherine found employment with the Oneida Limited Silversmiths and Ames Department Store.

  On September 2, 1946 Catherine and Fredrick R. McDermott were united in marriage at St. Helena’s Church of Sherrill and shared this sacred vow of over fifty years together until Mr. McDermott’s death on December 30, 1996.

  Catherine found great joy in caring for her husband and raising her four children.

In her spare time she enjoyed reading and was a faith-filled member of St. Helena’s Church of Sherrill.

  Surviving are three children, Brian and daughter-in-law Maria McDermott of Lewisburg, PA, two daughters Margaret “Peggy” Strong of Lafayette and Janice Hudson of Oneida, five grandchildren and one great-grandson and several nieces and nephews.

  Catherine was predeceased by her husband; Fredrick, two sons, Michael Andrew McDermott and Thomas Michael McDermott and her siblings.

  Calling hours will be private. A mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, January 25, 2023 at 12:00 p.m. at St. Helena’s Church, 210 Primo Ave., Sherrill, NY. Burial will be in St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Oneida, New York.
